It has been fun to watch our Olympians compete in Paris and, in the case of Jessica Fox with the Canoe slalom, win Gold. The look of sheer satisfaction on the face of athletes as they stand on the podium with a gold medal around their neck is a sight to behold. These images got me thinking about what really does satisfy in life. Is it an achievement like a medal or a trophy? Perhaps a career or academic excellence? Maybe a relationship, or material possessions, or wealth? What in life truly leads to lasting happiness and satisfaction? The Bible gives us the answer to this deep, teleological question:
As for me, I shall behold Your face in righteousness;
I shall be satisfied with Your likeness when I awake.
Psalm 17:15
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.
Matthew 5:6
The Word of The Lord shows us that true, long-lasting satisfaction only comes from experiencing a relationship with the God who made us, loves us, forgives us, and gives us right-standing before Him. Where temporal glories like riches, talents and achievements fade over time (if not within our lifetime, then certainly by the end of it), there is an eternal Glory that will last forever. Not only is a relationship with God eternal, but it is also the only thing that will really satisfy us. The metaphorical hole in the heart can only be filled by Jesus. The Olympic scenes of triumph are thrilling to watch, but they will certainly pass and we, along with the athletes will move on. There is a deeper, persistent satisfaction that is available to all - a relationship with God. My hope and prayer for all of us is that we would experience that kind of satisfaction.
God bless you.
