This term, our Year 9 and 10 students have been cooking up creativity in the kitchen with their Healthy Food focus and ending with a Healthy Food Wrap Assessment, a deliciously hands-on project that combined culinary skills with nutritional knowledge and design thinking. Learning was focused on the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating, and at the heart of this assessment was the choices everyday Australians make at lunch times, with a focus on helping students understand how to build balanced meals. The learning emphasises choices that include:

  • Plenty of vegetables, legumes, and fruit

  • Whole grains and cereals

  • Lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts, and seeds

  • Dairy and alternatives

  • Limited intake of discretionary foods (like sugary snacks and processed items)

Students explored how these food groups contribute to overall health and wellbeing, and used this knowledge to design wraps that were not only tasty but also nutritionally balanced. Each student was challenged to create a wrap that met specific health criteria while also appealing to a target audience—whether it was sporty teens, busy professionals, or families on the go. They experimented with ingredients, flavours, and textures, and learned how to read food labels, substitute ingredients, and present their creations with flair. Throughout the project, students demonstrated a wide range of skills:

  • Critical thinking in evaluating food choices

  • Practical cooking techniques like chopping, grilling, and assembling

  • Food safety and hygiene practices

  • Presentation and communication through plating visual displays

The final wraps were a hit! From vibrant veggie-packed rolls to protein-rich combos, each creation reflected thoughtful planning and a strong understanding of healthy eating principles. Students proudly shared their wraps with peers and staff, sparking conversations about nutrition and inspiring healthier choices. We’re proud of the enthusiasm and innovation shown by our Year 9 and 10 students. Their wraps weren’t just food—they were a celebration of learning, health, and creativity!
