This term in Music, Year 4/5 students explored The Sorcerer’s Apprentice by French composer Paul Dukas. Through listening, discussion, and creative response, students learned how music can tell a story using sound alone. They identified key musical elements such as dynamics (loud/soft), tempo (fast/slow), and timbre (instrument sounds).
Students practised recognising instruments of the orchestra, created their own magical storyboards, and worked in groups to compose and perform soundscapes. A highlight was learning to conduct their classmates, using hand gestures to control volume and speed — just like a real orchestra conductor!
