Kitchen Garden Project
Our Year 7 students have been enthusiastically engaging in the Kitchen Garden Project this term, drawing inspiration from the Edible Schoolyard curriculum. The program has provided a wonderful opportunity for students to connect classroom learning with hands on experiences in sustainability, teamwork, and service.
Throughout the term, students have nurtured a variety of seasonal vegetables and herbs, learning not only about planting and cultivation but also about the importance of soil health, composting, and water conservation. The garden has become a living classroom where science, health, and community values intersect.
Last week, students proudly celebrated their first harvest. Fresh produce, including lettuces, beans, tomatoes, snow peas and herbs were gathered and shared with the school community. PLans ahead are to use some of the harvest for some simple recipes to be prepared by the students, reinforcing the idea that food grown with care can nourish both body and spirit.
The project has also highlighted the service learning dimension, as students reflected on how growing and sharing food fosters responsibility, gratitude, and a sense of contribution. The Kitchen Garden is more than a patch of soil; it is a space where students learn resilience, collaboration, and respect for the environment.
We look forward to many more harvests ahead and welcome any parents or school community members who would like to contribute time to volunteer in the garden. Please contact deborahparker@acc.edu.au to provide a Working with Children Check and discuss the volunteering opportunity further.
